Pinepoint Beach Maine Morning Session

Family

back to blog

I recently had the absolute joy of photographing the sweetest family while they were visiting Maine — two loving parents and their adorable baby, soaking up some coastal magic before heading back home. For this session, we met in the morning at one of my favorite beaches in the area, and honestly, I just have to say: morning sessions might be one of my favorite hidden gems.

Now, if you’ve spent any time scrolling photography websites or Instagram feeds, you’ve probably seen a lot of talk about “golden hour” — those dreamy moments at sunrise or sunset when the light is soft and warm. And don’t get me wrong, it is beautiful! But here’s the thing: sunrise in the summer? That usually means showing up at the beach by 5 or 6 a.m. — which means waking up around 3:30 or 4:00… and let’s be real: most parents of young kids are not signing up for that.

Here’s why I love late morning beach sessions:
    •    We typically shoot around 8–9 AM — still early, but not painful-early.
    •    The light is definitely a little brighter than sunrise or sunset, but it’s still so lovely — especially at the beaches I love to work at, where the landscape gives us some soft, natural diffusion.
    •    The beaches are way less crowded, which gives everything this peaceful, intimate feeling.
    •    And best of all? Kids are generally happiest in the morning — fed, rested, and ready to explore.

This session was exactly that. The baby was full of giggles and curiosity, the parents were relaxed and playful, and we captured some truly beautiful moments — toes in the sand, soft snuggles, and all the in-between magic that makes family photography so special.

Another bonus of morning sessions? Once we wrap up, your day is just beginning. I’ve had families head off to grab donuts, do something fun in town, or even make a full beach day of it with everything already packed in the car. It’s such a sweet way to start the day.

So if you’re thinking about a beach session with young kids and wondering if sunset is going to work for your crew — just know there’s another great option. Morning light + happy kiddos = the kind of photos you’ll treasure for years.
