As summer approaches, I can’t wait to get back to the beach and capture the beauty of Maine’s stunning coastlines with your family! There’s something magical about the Maine shore – the waves, the light, and the natural beauty – that makes it the perfect backdrop for family photos. If you’re planning a beach session this summer, here are a few tips to help you make the most of it and create lasting memories.

1: 1.5 to 2 Hours Before Sunset – Timing is Key!
The right timing can make or break your beach photos, and one of my favorite times to photograph families is 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset. During this time, the light is soft, warm, and flattering, creating that beautiful golden glow that makes beach photos so dreamy. Plus, this time of day tends to be quieter with fewer people on the beach, giving us more space and peace to work with. It’s the perfect opportunity to capture the gorgeous light that reflects off the water, and it also provides a stunning backdrop of rich blue and pink hues in the sky. If you’re working with young kids, they often do well at this time too, since it’s not too late in the day for them to still be energetic and in a great mood!

2: Dress for Comfort and Style
When it comes to what to wear, comfort is key. If you feel comfortable in your outfit, it will show in the photos! I recommend choosing clothes that you feel relaxed and confident in. Earthy tones and neutrals work great on the beach as they complement the natural surroundings, while avoiding anything too bright or busy. Layers are also a good choice – they add texture to your photos and can come in handy if the weather cools off by the water. Don’t feel the need to buy a whole new wardrobe for the session; I’m happy to help you choose outfits from what you already have so that you’re both comfortable and stylish.

3: Let Loose and Have Fun!
The beach is a place for fun and relaxation, so my top tip is to enjoy the moment and let your family have fun! The Maine coastline offers incredible scenery – from sandy beaches to rocky cliffs and tall trees – so we’ll have lots of stunning backdrops to work with. But the best photos come from those candid, fun moments. Whether it’s kids running through the sand, playing in the waves, or simply laughing together, those natural moments will show the true spirit of your family. After a few posed shots, I encourage everyone to just relax and enjoy the beach. You’ll probably get a little sandy and wet (which is half the fun!), so I recommend bringing a change of clothes, a few towels to dry off, and maybe even some baby powder to get the sand off easily.
