How To Choose A Good Family Photographer

Choosing the right family photographer is a significant decision. If you are doing a simple google search it can often feel like a daunting task since there are so many photography styles and package options.  The images captured during a family portrait session often become cherished memories, adorning your walls and albums for years to come. In this post I am going to help you navigate the process and ensure you select the perfect photographer who can capture the essence of your family beautifully. I would love to be your family portrait photographer but it is more important to me that you choose the right family photographer for your family even if that isn’t me.

1. STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Before spending countless hours looking at the many many different Maine Family Photography websites, take a moment to define your photography style is. Are you drawn to candid, documentary photographers, or do you prefer more posed and formal portraits? Are you looking to do in-home sessions or are you looking for a studio photographer.  Each offer very different services and have pros and cons to each.  Knowing your style will help you narrow down your search and find a photographer whose portfolio aligns with your vision.

My personal photography style is a mix of posed and candid. As a mother, I truly understand wanting that “everyone looking at the camera smiling” photo. However, some of my favorite images are the ones that showcase the connection and laughter between me and my loved ones.  I always find this blend gives you the best of both worlds.

I have two type of session.  One being in-home sessions that take place in the comfort of your own home or on location which is a location in the Southern Maine area.  Either way you will get beautiful heirloom images.  You just have to decide what look you are going for.

2. GOOGLE REVIEWS & PREVIOUS CLIENTS RECOMMENDATIONS

Start your search by researching local photographers online. Websites, online reviews, social media platforms, and photography directories are great places to begin. Look for customer reviews and testimonials to gain insights into the experiences of others. Ask friends, family, or colleagues for recommendations. Personal recommendations often provide a trustworthy perspective on a photographer’s professionalism, creativity, and overall satisfaction.

I have been blessed with some of the best clients ever. Almost all of the families I photograph come back year after year. I have been photographing many of these families for over a decade and have witnessed their weddings, pregnancy and new babies. Nothing gives me more joy than when clients turn into friends. See some past reviews here.

3. REVIEW THEIR PORTFOLIO

A photographer’s website is their visual resume. Take the time to carefully analyze their previous work. Look for consistency in style, quality, and creativity. Pay attention to the emotions captured in the photos. See how they light their images and edit their images. You want a consistent style and look so that you know exactly what you will be getting. If their portfolio is inconsistent it might mean you won’t get exactly what you expect from your session with them.

I carefully edit each image in your gallery. I work hard to have a consistent style by using light in a special way. I strive for a well exposed image with great skin tones and colors. However, the most important factor to me is having image that look relaxed, fun and connected.

4. COMMUNICATION & CUSTOMER SERVICE

Years of experience have led me to realize that the most important aspect to a good session is effective communication. From the first initial contact to the final gallery or product delivery the way the way a photographer makes you feel is just as important as the final images themselves.  Reach out to potential photographers and assess their responsiveness, clarity, and willingness to address your questions. A photographer who takes the time to understand your expectations and communicates openly is more likely to deliver the results you desire. Clear communication ensures that everyone is on the same page regarding the shoot details, location, a backup plan and any specific requests you may have.

5. EXPERIENCE MATTERS

While everyone starts somewhere, experience often brings a level of expertise and confidence. Look for a photographer with a proven track record, especially if you have specific requirements or a large family. An experienced photographer is more likely to navigate various lighting conditions, handle different personalities, and adapt to unexpected situations during the session. Don’t hesitate to inquire about their experience in family photography and ask for references if needed.

I have been photographing clients since fall of 2010. After over 100 weddings and many many more family sessions I feel like I have seen it all. This experience has taught me how to work with children who are not into a session or bad lighting. Experience truly is the best way to become good photographer.

6. BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS

Determine your budget before starting your search. Photography prices can vary widely, so having a clear budget in mind will help you narrow down your options. Keep in mind that quality often comes at a price, but this doesn’t mean you can’t find talented professional photographer within your budget. Be transparent about your budget when discussing packages with photographers, and ensure that there are no hidden costs that may catch you by surprise later.

Photographer packages can fluctuate.  Most charge some sort of session fee and you will have additional fees for various amounts of digital files or prints.  Others will have one set price and include all the digitals.  There is not one best option.  The all inclusive can be nice since you pay up front and receive all the images after.  No need to make decisions on what images to pick.  However, smaller collections can be nice to book and pay for this way when you see the images and love them (like I know you will) you can upgrade to get the full collection.  However, if you do not love all of them you haven’t already paid for them in advance.  It gives you a little bit of control.

7. LOCATION AND SETTING

Consider what you think is the perfect location and setting of the photoshoot. Some photographers specialize in studio work, while others excel in outdoor or on-location settings. Think about the environment that best represents your family. If you have a favorite park, beach, or even your own home, find a photographer who is comfortable and skilled in that particular setting. The right location can significantly enhance the overall aesthetic of your family photos.

I am skilled at both in home session and on location such as beach and fields. I have packages that give you the ability to make the choice for yourself and I show portfolio images that reflect the different types of sessions I offer.

8. EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY

I am a big believer that the camera does not make the photographer. However, with that said having good equipment is important for high-resolution printing. It is also important to have up-to-date and reliable camera gear as well as backup gear such as a hard drive (even for family photography). A photographer who invests in quality equipment demonstrates a commitment to delivering the best possible results.

9. FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMMODATIONS

Life with a family can be unpredictable, and flexibility from your photographer is invaluable. Find a great photographer who is understanding and accommodating if you need to reschedule or if there are unexpected changes during the shoot. The right photographer will work with you to create a comfortable and enjoyable experience, allowing for candid moments and genuine interactions to unfold naturally.

I have a policy that if you little ones are not feeling good or the weather is bad I am always willing to work with you to reschedule. I want your session to be a fun one and situations like sick kiddos do not work well for accomplishing that.

10. CONTRACT AND POLICIES REVIEW

Before making any commitments, carefully review the photographer’s contract and policies. Ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included in the package/collections, digital images, any additional costs, and the photographer’s cancellation or rescheduling policies. A transparent and well-documented agreement protects both parties and sets expectations for the entire process, from the initial consultation to the delivery of the final images.

11. PERSONAL CONNECTION

Trust your instincts when evaluating potential photographers. A positive personal connection can greatly impact the overall experience and the quality of the photos. During the initial consultation, assess whether the photographer makes you feel comfortable and at ease. A photographer who values building a rapport with clients is more likely to capture authentic moments and expressions during the session.

12. TURNAROUND TIME

It is so important to ask how long it will take to receive your images.  It can range from a few days to a few months.  I am a big believer in high-quality photos but I also believe it is important to get those photos back to my clients as quick as I can.  I show a preview image on social media and then deliver a full gallery within 2 weeks.  No one wants to wait months to see their images.  I know I wouldn’t want to wait that long.

CHOOSING A GOOD FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER IN MAINE…

In conclusion, choosing the best family photographer involves a combination of research, communication, and personal preference. Take the time to define your style, research local photographers, analyze portfolios, and consider factors such as experience, budget, and flexibility. Clear communication, a positive personal connection, and a transparent contract are essential elements of a successful collaboration. By following these steps, you can confidently choose your perfect family photographer who will capture beautiful and meaningful moments for your family to treasure for years to come.
