The Perfect Maine Vacation: Why Family Photos Belong on Your Itinerary

Family

back to blog

When this sweet family traveled to Maine with their baby, Mom had one request for their family photos: she wanted that timeless, iconic New England feel. Think rugged rocky coastline, crashing waves, charming lighthouses, and the warm glow of a Maine sunset.

We began their evening at Kettle Cove, where the rocky shoreline and sweeping ocean views create one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes and sunsets in Southern Maine. With a little one in tow, we took our time exploring the shoreline, soaking in the salty air, and capturing all of those sweet moments that make this season of life so special.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Portland Head Light, where we finished the session in front of one of Maine’s most iconic landmarks. The lighthouse, golden light, and dramatic coastline created the perfect ending to an unforgettable evening.

Every time this family looks back at these photographs, they’ll remember more than just what Maine looked like—they’ll remember what it felt like to spend this season together.

Why Maine Is the Perfect Family Vacation Destination

There’s something special about Maine that keeps families coming back year after year.

Maybe it’s the slower pace.

Maybe it’s mornings spent walking the beach, afternoons exploring charming coastal towns, and evenings watching the sun disappear into the Atlantic.

Maybe it’s the lobster rolls, homemade ice cream, and salty ocean breeze.

Whatever it is, Maine has a way of helping families reconnect.

Whether you’re visiting with a baby who’s experiencing the ocean for the very first time or older children who can’t wait to explore every beach, trail, and tide pool, Maine offers countless opportunities to make meaningful memories together.

Why Schedule Family Photos During Your Maine Vacation?

Vacation is one of the few times everyone gets to slow down. There are no school pickups, work meetings, or endless to-do lists—just time together. That relaxed pace naturally leads to genuine smiles, playful moments, and photographs that feel like your family.

Even better, the scenery becomes part of your story. You simply can’t recreate Maine’s rocky coastline, historic lighthouses, sandy beaches, or ocean sunsets back home.

Favorite Places for Families Visiting Southern Maine

Portland Head Light

If you’re only visiting one lighthouse while you’re here, make it Portland Head Light.

It’s one of the oldest lighthouses in the country and one of the most iconic landmarks in Maine. Fort Williams Park offers wide open grassy areas where little ones can safely roam, paved walking paths that are stroller-friendly, incredible ocean views, and spectacular sunsets that make every visit memorable. There is adorable gardens as well as cute playground. Don’t forget your swimsuit because the rocky beach is great for swimming and rock collecting.

Kennebunkport

Kennebunkport is everything people imagine when they picture a charming New England seaside town.

The streets are lined with locally owned shops, seafood restaurants, candy stores, ice cream shops, and beautiful historic homes. It’s incredibly walkable, welcoming to both kids and dogs, and has a relaxed atmosphere that encourages families to slow down and simply enjoy being together.

Whether you’re grabbing lobster rolls by the water, enjoying an ice cream cone while strolling Dock Square, or watching the boats in the harbor, it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon here.

Old Orchard Beach

Old Orchard Beach is all about family fun.

The seven-mile sandy beach is perfect for swimming, digging in the sand, and splashing in the waves. The historic pier is filled with restaurants, sweet treats, and ocean views, while the nearby amusement rides and arcades make it a favorite destination for families with school-aged children.

It’s one of those places that creates the kind of childhood vacation memories people talk about for years.

York Beach & Nubble Light

York Beach offers the perfect combination of beautiful scenery and classic family fun.

After taking in the breathtaking views of Nubble Light, families can spend the afternoon at the beach, grab ice cream, browse the charming local shops, or stop by one of the old-fashioned arcades that have entertained generations of visitors.

It’s a wonderful place to experience the nostalgic charm that makes Maine summers so memorable.

Take a Piece of Maine Home

The souvenirs eventually get tucked away. The beach towels get washed, the sand disappears from the car, and the vacation comes to an end.

But your photographs become the one thing that brings you right back to those moments—the tiny hand wrapped around your finger, your baby laughing at the sound of the waves, your children exploring the rocky coastline, or everyone snuggled together as the sun sets behind a lighthouse.

If you’re planning a trip to Southern Maine, I’d love to help you preserve those memories with photographs that feel just as timeless as the place itself.
