1. Consider the Seasonal Weather and Location

Maine’s spring and summer seasons are typically mild but can vary depending on where you are in the state. Whether you’re shooting in coastal areas like Portland or Acadia National Park, or inland near the mountains, it’s important to dress in a way that balances the weather and location:

  • Spring Weather: Spring in Maine can be unpredictable, with cool mornings and evenings, and warmer afternoons. The air near the coast tends to be cooler due to the ocean breeze, so layering is essential. Opt for light, breathable fabrics that you can easily layer with a cardigan, jacket, or scarf. A flowy dress or a stylish top and denim jacket would be great options.
  • Summer Weather: Maine summers are typically mild but can get warm in the afternoons, especially in more inland areas. Light, breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, and chambray are ideal. Be mindful that evenings near the coast can cool down significantly, so consider packing a jacket or light sweater just in case.

Also, if you’re planning on taking photos in specific locations like the beach or wooded areas, think about practicality—sandy beaches may require barefoot or comfortable footwear, and hiking trails may call for shoes that are sturdy yet stylish.

2. Choosing a Color Palette for a Cohesive Look

The key to great family photos is a harmonious color palette that enhances the natural beauty of your surroundings without competing with it. For a Maine photoshoot, the following color tips are helpful:

  • Soft and Muted Tones: Choose colors that complement nature’s pastel palette in spring and summer. Soft blues, blush pinks, lavender, mint green, and peach can all work beautifully with the backdrop of fields, trees, or ocean waves.
  • Earthy Neutrals: Earthy tones like muted greens, taupes, browns, and creams are timeless and photograph beautifully in Maine’s natural landscape, from its lush forests to its sandy shores. These hues also keep the focus on your family rather than loud, contrasting colors.
  • Coastal and Nautical Colors: If you’re photographing near the coast, consider soft shades of blue, white, and sandy tones, which blend effortlessly with the ocean and sky. Navy and seafoam green can also be great choices to bring out the coastal vibes.

Avoid: Bright, saturated colors such as neon shades or overly bold patterns. These can distract from the natural beauty and draw attention away from your family.

3. Fabrics and Textures for a Natural, Timeless Look

When choosing fabrics, the aim is to keep it comfortable, breathable, and photogenic. The fabric choice will not only determine how comfortable everyone feels but also how your family looks in photos.

  • Cotton & Linen: These materials are soft, breathable, and perfect for the warmer spring and summer months. They also move beautifully in photographs, creating a natural, relaxed vibe.
  • Flowy and Drapey Fabrics: If you’re looking for movement in your photos, consider flowy skirts or dresses for the women and girls. Fabrics like chiffon, rayon, or light jersey create soft, elegant motion that adds a dynamic feel to the image.
  • Avoid Overly Heavy Fabrics: Heavier fabrics, such as wool or thick polyester blends, can make you feel hot and uncomfortable, especially during summer. Stick to lightweight materials that allow movement.

4. Outfit Coordination (Not Matching)

One of the most common mistakes in family photo sessions is dressing everyone in matching outfits, which can often feel overly staged. Instead, focus on creating a coordinated look:

  • Complement, Don’t Match: Select outfits that complement each other in color and style, but allow each person’s individuality to shine through. A coordinated look doesn’t mean everyone wears the same shirt or color—it means choosing outfits that feel like they belong together, even if the colors or styles aren’t exactly the same.
  • For Moms: Soft, flowy dresses in light colors or patterns are perfect for spring and summer shoots. Dresses that have movement—such as maxi dresses, or those with pleats or ruffles—will add a feminine, graceful look. Pair them with strappy sandals or wedges to keep it comfortable and stylish.
  • For Dads: Opt for smart-casual options like button-down shirts, lightweight polos, or knit sweaters. Khaki pants, chinos, or shorts (in neutral colors) will blend seamlessly with the setting and still look polished. You can also layer with a denim jacket or casual blazer to elevate the look slightly.
  • For Kids: Keep their outfits playful but simple. A collared shirt for boys or a light dress for girls is perfect. Avoid clothing with characters or distracting logos, and instead, go for patterns such as gingham, stripes, or floral prints. Comfort is key for kids to stay happy during the shoot, so make sure their clothes allow them to move freely.

5. Footwear

Footwear should be practical yet stylish, especially if your shoot takes place in outdoor settings like the beach or trails. Here are some suggestions:

  • Beach Sessions: For beach shoots, go barefoot for a more natural look (if it’s comfortable), but if you prefer shoes, opt for sandals, espadrilles, or soft ballet flats.
  • Wooded or Park Settings: Consider stylish yet practical shoes such as comfortable flats, boots, or low heels for women, and loafers, desert boots, or sneakers for men. These styles will keep you comfortable while also looking chic.
  • Color Considerations: Stick to neutral, earthy colors or pastels for shoes. White sneakers or sandals are ideal and won’t overpower the outfit.
  • Avoid High Heels: Unless you’re sure the terrain is flat and stable, avoid high heels. They can be difficult to walk in on uneven surfaces and may not fit the relaxed vibe of the shoot.

6. Accessories: Keep It Simple and Elegant

Accessories can elevate an outfit, but they should not take the spotlight. Choose minimal, tasteful accessories that add texture and dimension to your look:

  • Scarves & Shawls: Soft, lightweight scarves are perfect for adding layers or texture to an outfit, especially for spring sessions. These are easy to remove if the weather warms up.
  • Jewelry: Simple pieces like a delicate necklace, stud earrings, or a watch add a refined touch without overwhelming the outfit. Avoid large, chunky jewelry that can distract from your faces.

7. Hair and Makeup

Natural beauty is key during these relaxed family sessions, but some light grooming can make a big difference.

  • Hair: Keep it simple and natural. Loose waves, soft curls, or a well-maintained ponytail are perfect options. If you plan to be near the water or wind, consider securing longer hair to avoid constant adjusting.
  • Makeup: Go for a fresh, natural look that enhances your features. Opt for a light foundation, a little blush, mascara, and neutral lipstick. You’ll want your makeup to look polished but still light and breathable for the warm months.

8. Avoiding Distractions

When dressing for a family shoot, it’s important to avoid clothing or accessories that may draw attention away from the natural beauty of the surroundings or your family members. Here are a few tips:

  • No Bold Logos or Graphics: Clothing with logos, brand names, or large graphics can distract from the overall aesthetic. Stick to solids or subtle patterns.
  • Avoid Overly Trendy Items: While trendy items can look good in photos, they can quickly become outdated. Stick with classic, timeless pieces that will still look great in years to come.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right outfits for your family photo session in Maine is all about blending with the natural beauty of the environment while keeping everyone comfortable and looking their best. When in doubt, go for soft, neutral tones, natural fabrics, and simple, classic styles. Remember, the most important thing is that everyone feels relaxed and confident, so take these tips as a guide, but don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the moment!
