As Maine Photographers my husband and I have (almost) always taken our own family photos. Maybe it is a control thing, but I love being able to edit the images myself. However, it can be very challenging to take your own photos. Setting up the tripod and focus when you are not in the frame presents many challenges. We typically take MANY MANY MANY more photos for our family with much less decent ones.
As my son turned one I knew I wanted to get a few family photos on the beach where we had done our maternity photos. Ocean Park Beach in Maine is one of my favorite spots. The light at sunset is just gorgeous. Not to mention the way the sun hits the dune grass is one of my favorite backdrops.
One benefit of taking our own photos is being able to pick a sunny, warm day with very limited wind. One thing I have learned is that if the wind is over 7-8 mph on the beach it will be a challenge. My hair specifically flies around and drives me crazy. So I always try to pick a night with low winds and that is nice weather. This particular night was perfect. We were able to play and laugh all while enjoying the sunset and waves.
I brought alone my Nikon F100 and a roll of film and just had fun. I used to shoot film a lot before my son was born but really hadn’t picked up any of my film cameras in almost a year. There is something so amazing about film images especially black and white film….which is my favorite.
