Spring/Summer 2024 Family Session Dresses for Mom

Family, Maternity, Newborn

back to blog

I understand that picking out outfits for your upcoming Maine family session is challenging. Honestly, this is probably the hardest part for most people. So I am trying to make it easy and show you so various options for Moms, Dads, kids and even grandmothers. This is the first post in a series. I plan to make a posts including outfits for dad , little boys little girls! I will continue to add more as I find them.

Today I am sharing some dress ideas for mom. As you will see I tend to like dresses that have a bit of a sleeve, cover the chest and are a bit flowey. I have found these are the best criteria for great family photo session dresses. Above all you need to be comfortable. I always suggest that MOM finds a dress or outfit that she feels comfortable in and then coordinates the rest of the families outfits.

If you are not someone who likes wearing dress (unlike myself…I LOVE THEM) then I can get you a few options for comfortable clothes such as skirts or pants. But like I said most important is that YOU feel comfortable. Put the clothes on, move around in them. Pick your little ones up. We do a lot of sitting, squatting and snuggling so the clothes are actually very important.

Because I am located so close to the coast of Maine I photograph many beach family sessions. I absolutely love these. I tell everyone to think about the colors you see at the beach and try to use those as inspiration. Choose 2-3 coordinating colors and go from there. Light colors such as white, cream, light blue, pink, soft green and yellow are fantastic choices.

Colors I try to avoid are Navy, black or very dark shades. Medium blue, middle gray and even a darker shade of yellow or tan can look fantastic as a accent color. Just make sure not to over do it.

Last, try to make sure you are not all in the same color. I tell my clients to try only putting 1 maybe 2 people in the same solid color or print. Then try coordinating the rest of the family.

I hope this helps and I can’t wait to see what you pick out for this summers family sessions!

Also check out a post I did for ‘Mature Woman‘ but to be honest I think these would be great for any age. They are a bit more relaxed and casual, but still stylish and coastal chic.
